PAUSE Program: New Call for Applications
A new call for applications is now open

| The PAUSE program is a national initiative that provides incentive grants to research organizations and higher education and research institutions planning to host a scientist or artist in danger who has been forced into exile.
This call for proposals offers two types of funding:
1/ Full funding for a 3-year doctoral contract (5 grants will be awarded). Only students who are not yet enrolled in a doctoral program in France and who have not been enrolled in a doctoral program in their home country for more than one year are eligible.Download the application guidelines.
2/ For all other applications, including those from doctoral students who have been enrolled in a doctoral program in France or in their home country for more than one year: co-funding of up to 60% (or 80% in the case of multiple applications) for one year, renewable once subject to a new evaluation. Please note that a renewal request for a third year may be submitted by doctoral students who were awarded grants in previous rounds.

| The purpose of this funding is to co-finance a project to host a foreign scientist fromfrom all geographic regions and all disciplinesmeeting all of the following eligibility criteria:

| Amount and duration of funding
The amount of funding awarded varies depending on the recipient’s status and experience, as well as whether the host institution has a social support program in place:
- Category 1 (doctoral student, research assistant), up to 20,000 euros;
- Category 2 (postdocs, associate professors, research engineers), up to 40,000 euros;
- Category 3 (university professor, research director), up to 60,000 euros.
The co-funding grant awarded by PAUSE is capped at 60% of the total budget submitted by the host institution. Co-funding of up to 80% may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the specific circumstances of the researchers and/or institutions, as well as for institutions that submit multiple applications per call.

| The financial support provided to host a candidate covers a period of up to one year. It may be renewed once, following a new evaluation process based on the progress of the work and the scientific results. Doctoral students enrolled in their first year at the time of their initial application may be eligible for co-funding for a third year to complete their doctorate, following an evaluation of the progress of their work based on the conclusions of the thesis monitoring committee at the host institution.
The PAUSE program’s executive management will request a review of the past year from both the researcher and the host institution upon completion of the hosting project outlined in the application.

| Preparation of application materials
Applications are submitted by public research organizations and public higher education institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation and/or the Ministry of Culture, as well as by private higher education institutions serving the public interest (EESPIG). Instructions for submitting an application are available on the PAUSE website.

| The PAUSE program encourages applicants outside France to begin looking for housing in coordination with their host institutions as early as possible before their arrival—ideally as soon as they submit their application. |
|
|
| Evaluation and Selection of Applications
Applications are evaluated by scientists, including members of the PAUSE program’s advisory committee, based on the following criteria:
- the level of urgency and threat;
- the quality of the scientific evidence;
- the details of the support program for social and professional integration.
The PAUSE Program Steering Committee selects applications based on the recommendations of the Sponsorship Committee. Its decisions are final.The selection results will be announced in late June 2020.
